    Gunther Osorio Head Coach

Gunther Rodriguez Osorio's journey is a testament to resilience and determination. Born in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, near Guantanamo Bay, he discovered a passion for swimming at a young age. This passion propelled him to the National Swimming School in Havana and eventually, the Cuban national team. He competed globally, including the 2000 Sydney Olympics, achieving notable success in butterfly and individual medley events.

In 2003, Gunther defected during the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic, seeking a new life. He reached Puerto Rico by raft and earned a swimming scholarship at the American University of Puerto Rico. In 2007, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and earning meritorious promotions. An injury prevented him from becoming a commissioned officer. Now a U.S. citizen, Gunther cherishes his adopted country.

He has been coaching swimming in the Triad area for more than nine years. During this time, I have had the privilege of mentoring swimmers who have qualified for the state championships, Junior Nationals, and the US Open Series.

Beyond his remarkable athletic and military career, Gunther is a dedicated husband and a loving father to a five-year-old.  He enjoys swimming, cycling, hiking, motorcycling, off-roading, and cooking, embracing the opportunities and adventures life in the United States has afforded him.
